BACK TO SCHOOL: The EMSB held its first-day of school media launch at Parkdale Elementary School in St. Laurent. On hand to welcome students were EMSB Chair Joe Ortona, Vice-Chair and St. Laurent Commissioner James Kromida, Parent Commissioner Maria Corsi, Director General Nick Katalifos, Assistant Directors General Pela Nickoletopoulos and Jack Chadirdjian, Regional Directors Jimmy Giannacopoulos and Darlene Kehyayan , Pedagogical Consultant for Citizenship and Culture Anne Maria De Silva, St. Laurent Liberal MNA Marwah Rizqy, St. Laurent Liberal MP (and former EMSB grad and teacher) Emmanuella Lambropoulos, St. Laurent Borough Mayor Alan DeSousa and Councillor Aref Salem (also interim leader of the opposition Ensemble Montréal). There was a lot of media present. At an assembly, Principal George Koutsoulis and new Vice-Principal Karolyn Liverman welcomed students back. Mr. Chadirdjian served as emcee and he asked each guest to share their first day of school recollections. Ms. Lambropoulos recounted how both Mr. Katalifos and Ms. Nickoletopoulos were her vice-principals dating back to her days as a student at Gardenview.

FIVE BOARDS/SERVICE CENTRES UNITE: The three school service centers on the Island of Montreal (SSC) — the Centre de services scolaire de Montréal, the Centre de services scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys, and the Centre de services scolaire de la Pointe-de-l’Île — along with the two school boards (SB) — the English Montreal School Board and the Lester B. Pearson School Board — held a joint press conference on August 22 to provide an update on the upcoming school year as they actively prepare to welcome students. They emphasized that all teams are working tirelessly as part of this annual operation. For several months, the administrations and staff of Montreal's school service centers and school boards have been meticulously planning and organizing the start of the school year. All teams are implementing the necessary actions to ensure that students have a good start to the school year. Planning for the start of the school year requires complex coordination, including the recruitment and assignment of staff, management of student registrations, class composition, organization of school transportation, building improvements, and the adaptation of educational services to meet the specific needs of students. Every aspect of the school year is handled with care to ensure that students, teachers, professional staff, and support staff have the appropriate resources from day one.

EMSB EXPRESS: The Fall 2024 edition of the EMSB Express has been published. It has been delivered to all elementary schools, with copies also provided for high school English teachers as well as AEVS centres. SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS: Voters within the territory of the EMSB will cast their ballots for the choice of chair and commissioner in one of 10 wards on Sunday, November 3. Advance polls will take place on Sunday, October 27. According to the School Elections Act, all parents are already registered on the Anglophone Electoral List. For any interested electors who would like to be registered on said list, you will find a link below to a form entitled Notice to the Anglophone school board - Option or revocation of option regarding the exercise of voting rights. To verify if you are on the EMSB Electoral List, you must first contact 1-888-ELECTION (1-888-353-2846) before submitting the form. All of the details are here
KAMALA HARRIS: The EMSB, and notably the staff, students and alumni of Westmount High School, are very excited to follow the current American Presidential elections. Democratic Party nominee and present-day Vice-President Kamala Harris graduated from Westmount High in 1981. Her best friend and former Westmount High classmate Wanda Kagan was at the party convention and interviewed on CNBC.

EDUCATION AND CAREER FAIR: More than 2,000 Secondary V students will attend the 24th annual English Montreal School Board Education and Career Fair on Wednesday, October 23 and Thursday, October 24 at St. Pius X Career Centre in Ahuntsic (9955 Papineau). Jack Dym of Pipe and Piling Supplies Ltd is the event’s title sponsor. From 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on October 23, the Education and Career Fair will be open to the community-at-large. Organizers note that this is a good opportunity for parents to attend with their children (Grades 9, 10 and 11) as they look towards post-secondary education options in a one-stop shopping experience. There is no charge and free parking.
MAGAZINES AVAILABLE: Once again this year, the Educational Services Department (ESD) is pleased to announce that the EngagED Learning (English version) and École branchée (French version) magazines are available to all EMSB educators through the Virtual Library here. These digital magazines provide valuable resources for educators to integrate technology into their classrooms and enhance their own digital skills. Their publications cover a wide range of topics and the EMSB has access to both past and current issues. The fall issue is hot off the (digital) press! The theme of this issue is “Navigating Cybersecurity in Education/Éduquer à la cybersécurité”. REDBLACKS EXEC: The Manager of Football Operations for the Canadian Football League’s Ottawa Redblacks is Joseph Panessidi. He attended Our Lady of Pompei Elementary in Ahuntsic and LaurenHill Academy in St. Laurent. He joined the Redblacks as coordinator of football operations in 2022 and was promoted a year later. A graduate of The University of Ottawa law school, he got his feet wet in football ops as an intern with the Alouettes in 2021. Along the way he also worked for Employment and Social Development Canada, the McGill University Health Centre and the Leonardo Da Vinci Centre in St. Leonard. Panessidi’s present duties include day-to-day logistics, team travel and scouting. During his final semester of pursuing a certificate in sports business management, he was required to do an internship and that was done with the Als. “Then I applied to the Ottawa Redblacks, I got an interview, was hired and I have been with the team ever since,” he said. MEDIA LITERACY WEEK: Media Literacy Week (MLW) is an annual event promoting digital media literacy across Canada, taking place each October. JUNIOR HOCKEY BOUND: Amelio Santini, who just completed Grade 10 at Royal Vale High School, is now in Halifax to join the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) Mooseheads franchise. He is only 16 years of age and will continue his high school education in Nova Scotia.
CANADA’S NATIONAL TEAM MEMBER: Former Lester B. Pearson High School Sport-études student and goalie Lucas Beckman played for the Canadian National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team at the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Edmonton, Alberta. Last year, he played with the Baie Comeau Drakkar in the QMJHL league. It is expected that Beckman will be drafted into the NHL, joining another Pearson High grad Anthony Duclair, now of the New York Islanders
RWA FOUNDATION: The Royal West Academy Foundation, which depends entirely on the generosity of the school community to raise funds for projects benefiting the students and staff directly, continues to do excellent work. Last year the school unveiled a brand-new auditorium (Performing Arts Centre), a project that had been in the making for over a decade and for which the Foundation has been intimately involved in, resulting in close to $420,000 raised towards this endeavor. They also raised funds for the redesign of their first Active Learning Classroom in the context of the Active Learning Classroom Campaign. Room 301 Math and Science was recently refitted with new furniture to accommodate different learning styles and teaching settings. The Active Learning Classroom Campaign is a multi-year project. Several classrooms will be selected to undergo a transformation each year. All children who attend Royal West Academy, including our children, will have the opportunity to benefit from the modernization of classrooms over the time they attend RWA. “Our objective is to raise funds for as many classrooms at the school that are needed,” said Foundation member Judith Obadia. STUDENT OF THE MONTH: The EMSB’s Student of the Month for September is Kayla Fusco. While Kayla just began her first year at Lester B. Pearson High School, she is being recognized for her dedication to her fellow students while she attended Gerald McShane Elementary School. While at Gerald McShane, Kayla was a dedicated volunteer for the school's breakfast program and knew exactly what was needed to make sure that the daily program ran smoothly. As a breakfast monitor, she was always a team-player, made sure that breakfast bins were delivered to each classroom, picked up by the end of the day and prepared for the next day.

Last year, in recognition of her efforts, the Breakfast Club of Canada named Kayla as one of Canada's "Breakfast Champions," which celebrated the outstanding work of volunteers and school teams who devote their time and energy to ensure children get a healthy start to their day. TED ED STUDENT TALKS: Last May the EMSB hosted its first ever TED Ed student talks at Royal West Academy. This event is the new version of the EMSB Public Speaking contest. The following student talks are being submitted to TED: Victoria Gonzalez and Mani Sadeghi, LaurenHill Academy; Nguyen Quynh Anh, Marymount Academy; Matilda Bernatchez, Vincent Massey Collegiate; and Michella Masella from Laurier Macdonald High School. The second year of TED Ed Student Talks in high schools will have a finale on May 25.

CULTURE AND CITIZENSHIP IN QUEBEC: The Ministère de l’Éducation is launching the Culture and Citizenship in Quebec (CCQ) program of study, which was introduced by some schools on an optional basis during the 2023-2024 academic year and will be mandatory in all schools for 2024-2025 school year. Learning about culture and citizenship in Quebec, students will evaluate sources, information and arguments, to identify the characteristics of culture and society in Quebec today, and to observe the related social relations. Subjects such as culture and dialogue will first be addressed in elementary school. Studies will then continue at the secondary level where ethics, citizenship and sociology will be addressed. The objective of the CCQ program is not to provide specific answers to complex ethical questions, but rather to lead students to develop their critical thinking skills and ability to engage freely in empathetic dialogue. The program prioritizes an appreciation of democratic principles, a secular state governed by the rule of law, and the values of equality and respect for the dignity of human beings as provided for in the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms. At the end of their schooling, students will have a meaningful repertoire of knowledge on personal development, interpersonal relationships as well as on all the dimensions of culture and society in Québec. Therefore, each child will have developed skills vital to their informed participation in exercising citizenship in Québec. The program will also lead students to aim for recognition of oneself and of others as well as for the common good. Anne-Marie De Silva is the EMSB consultant for this course.

TERRY FOX RUNS: Every year, organizers of Terry Fox runs say they continue to be blown away by the generosity of schools across Canada. Every school that signs up receives a complementary Terry Fox Toolkit of promotional materials, a customized online fundraising page and access to a wide array of online resources. Here is a letter we received with information for schools interested in participating.
SPCA PROGRAMMING: The Montreal SPCA has developed a Humane Education program and have been visiting elementary school classrooms since the spring! Erin Martellani, Campaign Manager for Humane Education and Animal Advocacy, has the honour of giving these first presentations. Her experience so far visiting students from kindergarten to Grade 3 has been incredibly uplifting. Children are naturally interested and curious about animals, and the kiddos she visited were no exception. They were excited to learn about the fascinating differences and similarities between humans and animals and were bursting to share their own experiences with the class. They were able to intuitively empathize with how the animals whose stories they heard must have felt in different situations and were eager to learn how to interpret a dog’s body language. These important skills will help them know how to approach a dog safely and when to respect their need for space, a crucial step in bite prevention. “All in all, I can’t decide whether the most rewarding part of these presentations so far has been the many impromptu hugs I get, how engaged and receptive the students are throughout my visits or just knowing that the future might be a little brighter thanks to these inspiring kids,” she said. THE CHORALE: In November 2022, the EMSB Chorale sang for a video on Westmount Park School with Les Rugissants (professional chamber choir) and the Cobalt string quartet for an episode in their ARCHES series featuring music and architecturally interesting buildings in Montreal. The English version has been released on YouTube and here is the link. Reminiscent of a student’s journey arriving at the end of her studies at Westmount Park School, this building is in a style referring to the British Mock Tudor and Late Gothic revival movements, with its stone and brick materials, an imposing architectural style inspired by castles, fortresses, and churches. This time, Les Rugissants share the stage with the EMSB Youth Chorale and the Cobalt Quartet, performing an excerpt from Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater.
GEMSTAR: The GemStar Circle of Excellence Scholarship and Mentorship Program, offered by the Playmas Montreal Cultural Association now enters its third year, running from October 2024 to April 2025, with a Graduation Ceremony in June. At that time successful participants will be awarded a $1,500 scholarship for their CEGEP studies. The GemStar Circle of Excellence is designed to recognize and nurture high-performing Black students entering Grade 11 who have demonstrated academic excellence and have maintained an average of at least 80 percent. Each selected student will be paired with a mentor, a professional from the community, to provide guidance and motivation throughout the school year. MIKE SHAW IN MEMORIAM: The EMSB mourns the passing of former Spiritual Community Animator Father Mike Shaw. Beloved priest, brother, friend, confessor, spiritual director, pastoral animator, and teacher, he passed away this past summer . Born in Alresford, Hampshire, England, he moved to Montreal and found community and inspiration at St. John Brebeuf Church, and after much soul searching, went to Boston to join the seminary in 1971. He was ordained to the Roman Catholic priesthood in 1975. While still a deacon, he joined St. Thomas a Becket Church in Pierrefonds, a placement that would change his life. It was there that Fr. Mike met his lifelong friend Margaret Million, and so came to live at 252 Biscaye, where he would remain until Margaret's death in 2019, always a beloved member of a loyal West Island Christian community.

Fr. Mike lived his vocation in every moment: ministering to the unhoused, the sick, the lonely, the dying. Everywhere he went he learned the names and life stories of strangers, seeing the beauty and intrinsic value in everyone he met. Appropriately, his priestly ministry never let him stay in one place. After decades as a spiritual animator travelling to schools throughout Montreal for the EMSB and doing replacement ministry in churches all over the island, at the age of 76 Mike finally settled down as pastor of St. Edward the Confessor Mission in Pointe Claire, where he worked with his congregation to bring new life to the parish. As a priest, he was well known for making everyone feel welcome and loved by God, part of the church and the Body of Christ. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to one of Fr. Mike's favorite charities, Operation Smile or the Salvation Army, or a charity of your choice.
ANIMATORS TITLES CHANGE: Student Services Department staff who previously were known as Spiritual Community Animators are now Personal Development and Community Involvement Service Animators.
POWER UP: During the month of September, Personal Development and Community Animator Vince Lacroce worked on a team-building welcoming workshop for students at L.I.N.K.S High School called "Power Up!" This fun-filled educational workshop was packed with games and exercises enabling students to gain a deeper understanding of teamwork, empathy, resilience, and improved communication skills. Participants engaged in various group challenges, collaborative games, all designed to strengthen their sense of belonging and community. Teachers and staff also took part, promoting an inclusive environment where everyone works together to achieve shared goals. "Our Team Building Day was an opportunity for students to step out of their comfort zones, work together, and form lasting connections,” says Lacroce. “These activities encourage students to embrace diversity, empathy, and unity, which are essential values both in and out of the classroom.”
CLARENCE BAYNE: The EMSB Council of Commissioners expressed their sincere condolences over the passing of Dr. Clarence Bayne. He was also a professor and lecturer at Concordia University, a founding member of the Black Studies Centre and Black Theatre Workshop in the early 1970s and was part of a group that pushed for then-mayor Jean Doré to recognize Black History Month in Montreal. Dr. Bayne held a lifelong dedication to championing the rights and voices of the English-speaking Black community in Quebec

SHADD'S DRAGON BOAT RACE: The 19th annual BDO Cedars CanSupport Dragon Boat Race took place on Saturday, September 7 in Lachine. A total of 650 paddlers from all across Montreal and all walks of life, raced to raise money for Cedars CanSupport, an organization that provides free, bilingual, support services to people who are undergoing cancer treatments at the MUHC, as well as to their family members. One of the teams was from the EMSB's Shadd Health and Business Centre in NDG. The SHADD/Baton Rouge Firebreathers raised close to $15,000 in 2023. This year they decided to aim a little higher and brought in $19,175. Teacher John Millar, one of the organizers, says he hopes the donations don’t stop there! They can be sent in until December 31 by visiting the Cedars Cancer Foundation website at https://www.cedars.ca/en and donating to the team.

The crew of Shadd students from the accounting and PAB programs were the driving engine of the boat. "Although we finished last, the students realized that teamwork and supporting cancer patients was of real educational value," said Mr. Millar. "Thanks to a comedy show in early May by Joe Cacchione and the generous donation from Domenic Aversa and his Baton Rouge restaurants, we were able to surpass our goal."

PIUS REUNION: Nicolino Iannotti, Phil Carmosino and Paolo Fratarcangeli report that on June 15, alumni from St. Pius X Comprehensive High School, Class of 1990, held a memorable evening, bringing together about 40 alumni for a wonderful reunion. It was held at Usine Grecque Souvlaki in Vaudreuil, where Mr. Carmosino graciously hosted with delicious food, drinks and a warm and inviting atmosphere. Angelo Palermo (Dynamic DJ) was the animated DJ for the evening and provided fantastic music that kept the energy high throughout the night. It was a pleasure to reconnect with old friends, catch up and reminisce about our high school days. Frank Kermit kicked off the dinner with a heartfelt speech and a moment to remember those alumni who were no longer with us. Later in the evening Stefania Freda entertained us with a rendition of Total Eclipse of the Heart and O Sole Mio. The evening then continued with many laughs and dancing.
MATH ANXIETY: The principal of John F. Kennedy Adult Education Centre (JFKAC), Elizabeth Lagodich, wishes to share her comments on the topic of math anxiety and trauma as it pertains to adult learners. “Our Centre has recently embarked on a campaign to raise awareness about how we effectively address math anxiety and trauma among adult learners,” she says. “Many of our students come to us with negative experiences from their previous academic journeys, carrying what we refer to as ‘negative math baggage.’ However, through a supportive environment, dedicated teachers, and a strong community, we have been able to transform these challenges into inspiring success stories. I believe there is a significant opportunity to explore this topic further, particularly focusing on adult learners and the role of public education centers in Montreal. Our efforts have not only helped individuals overcome their fears but have also highlighted the potential of adult education to change lives. Unfortunately, these successes often go unrecognized, and there is a persistent bias against adult education that I continually challenge.

JFKAC is launching an innovative program (Sequoia) designed to help young adults who struggled with math in high school. This new initiative specifically targets students who experienced math anxiety and trauma, which prevented them from graduating with their high school cohort. At this time of the year, many parents are facing the challenge of supporting their adult children who didn't complete high school due to math difficulties. “Our program offers a solution by creating a specialized cohort for students recommended by high school guidance counselor,” she says. “These students typically have math skills well below grade level because of their anxiety and negative experiences with math. This story will resonate with countless parents who are concerned about their children's future and are looking for ways to help them move forward in life. The program provides a second chance for these young adults to overcome their math challenges and achieve their educational goals. By addressing math anxiety and trauma head-on, we are offering hope to families and opening doors for students who may have thought their educational journey was over. This is a compelling narrative that showcases how adult education can transform lives and provide new opportunities for those who struggled in traditional high school settings.

JOUR DE LA RENTRÉE: À l’occasion de la rentrée scolaire, la CSEM y est allée d’un lancement médiatique à l’école primaire Parkdale, à Saint-Laurent. Étaient présents pour accueillir les élèves le président de la CSEM, Joe Ortona; James Kromida, vice-président et commissaire de la circonscription de Saint-Laurent; Maria Corsi, commissaire parent; Nick Katalifos, directeur général de la CSEM; Pela Nickoletopoulos et Jack Chadirdjian, directeurs généraux adjoints; Jimmy Giannacopoulos et Darlene Kehyayan, directeurs régionaux, Anne Maria De Silva, conseillère pédagogique – culture et citoyenneté; Marwah Rizqy, députée libérale provinciale de Saint-Laurent; Emmanuella Lambropoulos, députée libérale fédérale de Saint-Laurent (ancienne enseignante et diplômée de la CSEM); Alan DeSousa, maire de Saint-Laurent et son conseiller Aref Salem (également chef intérimaire du parti d’opposition Ensemble Montréal). Les médias s’étaient déplacés en grand nombre pour l’occasion. Le directeur de l’école, George Koutsoulis, et la nouvelle directrice adjointe, Karolyn Liverman, ont souhaité la bienvenue aux élèves. Agissant à titre de maître de cérémonie lors de cet événement, M. Chadirdjian a demandé à chacune des personnes invitées de partager le souvenir qu’elles gardent de leur premier jour de classe. Mme Lambropoulos a raconté que M. Katalifos et Mme Nickoletopoulos étaient respectivement directeur et directrice ajointe lorsqu’elle était élève à l’école Gardenview.
CINQ COMMISSIONS SCOLAIRES ET CENTRES DE SERVICES SCOLAIRES S’UNISSENT: Les trois centres de services scolaires de l’île de Montréal (CSS) — le Centre de services scolaire de Montréal, le Centre de services scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys et le Centre de services scolaire de la Pointe-de-l’Île — ainsi que les deux commissions scolaires (CS) — la Commission scolaire English-Montréal et la Commission scolaire Lester-B.-Pearson — ont tenu un point de presse conjoint le 22 août pour faire le point sur la rentrée scolaire alors qu’ils se préparent activement à accueillir les élèves. Ils ont tenu à rappeler que toutes les équipes travaillent sans relâche dans le cadre de cette opération annuelle. Depuis plusieurs mois, les directions et le personnel des centres de services scolaires et des commissions scolaires de Montréal s’emploient à planifier et organiser la rentrée scolaire de manière méticuleuse. Toutes les équipes mettent en œuvre les actions nécessaires qui permettront aux élèves de bien entamer l’année scolaire. La planification de la rentrée exige une coordination complexe, incluant l’embauche et l’affectation du personnel, la gestion des inscriptions, la composition des classes, l’organisation du transport scolaire, l’amélioration des bâtiments ainsi que l’adaptation des services éducatifs aux besoins spécifiques des élèves. Chaque aspect de la rentrée est traité avec soin pour s’assurer que les élèves, le corps enseignant, le personnel professionnel et le personnel de soutien disposent des ressources adéquates dès le premier jour. KAMALA HARRIS: La CSEM, et tout particulièrement le personnel, les élèves et les anciens de l’école secondaire Westmount, sont très enthousiastes à l’idée de suivre la campagne présidentielle américaine en vue de la prochaine élection. La candidate du Parti démocrate et actuelle vice-présidente Kamala Harris a fréquenté l’école secondaire Westmount où elle a obtenu son diplôme en 1981. Wanda Kagan, sa meilleure amie et ancienne camarade de classe à l’école Westmount, était présente à la convention du parti et a été interviewée sur CNBC.

MAGAZINES À LA DISPOSITION DES ÉDUCATEURS : Encore une fois cette année, l’équipe des Services éducatifs est heureuse d’annoncer que magazines EngagED Learning (en version anglaise) et École branchée (en version française) sont offerts à l’ensemble des éducateurs et éducatrices par l’entremise de la Bibliothèque virtuelle (https://virtuallibrary.emsb.qc.ca/fr-ca/bibliotheque-virtuelle). Ces magazines numériques fournissent des ressources précieuses aux éducatrices et aux éducateurs afin d’intégrer la technologie en classe et d’enrichir leurs propres compétences numériques. Une panoplie de sujets y sont abordés, et la CSEM a accès aux numéros antérieurs et actuels. Le numéro d’automne est tout juste sorti des presses (numériques!) et a pour thème « Éduquer à la cybersécurité/Navigating Cybersecurity in Education ». Qui plus est, deux des membres de l’équipe des Services aux élèves, soit Caroline Dupuis (conseillère pédagogique – RÉCIT) et Julian Taylor (bibliothécaire), ont rédigé un article publié dans la version anglaise du numéro d’automne, ayant pour titre Empowering Students as Safe and Responsible Digital Citizens. SEMAINE ÉDUCATION MÉDIAS: La Semaine éducation médias est un événement visant à promouvoir l’éducation aux médias numériques dans tout le Canada. Elle se déroule chaque année en octobre. Les écoles, les bibliothèques, les musées et les organismes communautaires organisent des événements et des activités tout au long de la semaine. La Semaine éducation médias 2024 se tiendra du 21 au 25 octobre. Inscrivez ces dates à votre calendrier.
DANS LES RANGS JUNIOR: Amelio Santini, qui vient de terminer sa 4e année de secondaire à l’école Royal Vale, est désormais à Halifax où il se joindra aux Mooseheads, équipe de la Ligue de hockey junior maritimes du Québec (LHJMQ). Âgé de seulement 16 ans, il poursuivra ses études secondaires en Nouvelle-Écosse.
MEMBRE DE L’ÉQUIPE NATIONALE CANADIENNE: Lucas Beckman, gardien de but et ancien élève du programme Sport-études de l’école secondaire Lester B. Pearson, était devant le filet de l’équipe nationale masculine estivale des moins de 18 ans du Canada lors de la Coupe Hlinka Gretzky 2024 à Edmonton, en Alberta. Il évoluait l’an dernier avec les Drakkar de Baie Comeau dans la LHJMQ. Tout indique que Lucas se taillera une place dans la LNH, aux côtés d’un autre ancien de l’école Pearson, soit Anthony Duclair, maintenant dans la formation des Islanders de New York.
NOUVELLE APPELLATION: Les animateurs/animatrices de vie spirituelle et d’engagement communautaire des Services aux élèves seront désormais désignés sous l’appellation animateurs/animatrices du développement personnel et de l’engagement communautaire.
FONDATION RWA : La Fondation de l’Académie Royal West, qui repose entièrement sur la générosité de la communauté scolaire pour recueillir des fonds destinés à des projets bénéficiant directement aux élèves et au personnel, poursuit son excellent travail. L'année dernière, l'école a inauguré un tout nouvel auditorium (Performing Arts Centre), un projet en chantier depuis plus de dix ans et dans lequel la Fondation a été étroitement liée, ce qui a permis de récolter près de 420 000 $. Des fonds ont également été amassés pour le réaménagement de leur première salle d'apprentissage actif dans le cadre de la campagne pour les salles de classe d'apprentissage actif. Du nouveau mobilier a récemment été ajouté au local 301 de mathématiques et de sciences pour convenir à différents styles d'apprentissage et à différents cadres d'enseignement. La campagne pour les classes d'apprentissage actif est un projet pluriannuel. Chaque année, plusieurs salles de classe seront sélectionnées pour subir une transformation. Tous les jeunes qui fréquentent l'Académie Royal West, y compris nos enfants, pourront tirer parti de la modernisation des salles de classe au cours de leur parcours scolaire à Royal West. « Notre objectif est d’amasser des fonds pour transformer le plus de salles de classe possible à l'école », de dire Judith Obadia, membre de la Fondation. ÉLÈVE DU MOIS : L'élève du mois de septembre de la CSEM est Kayla Fusco. Bien qu’elle vienne tout juste de faire son entrée à l'école secondaire Lester B. Pearson, Kayla reçoit cette reconnaissance pour son grand dévouement démontré envers les autres élèves alors qu'elle fréquentait l'école primaire Gerald McShane. Elle y était une bénévole dévouée du programme de déjeuner de l'école et savait exactement comment veiller quotidiennement à son bon déroulement. Surveillante durant le déjeuner, elle a toujours fait preuve d'esprit d'équipe et veillait à ce que les bacs à déjeuner soient distribués à chaque classe, ramassés à la fin de la journée et préparés pour le lendemain. L'année dernière, en reconnaissance de ses efforts, le Club des petits déjeuners du Canada a désigné Kayla comme l'une des « Personnes remarquables » du Club au Canada, soulignant ainsi le travail exceptionnel des bénévoles et des équipes-écoles qui consacrent temps et énergie pour que les enfants puissent démarrer la journée du bon pied. Félicitations Kayla! Nous espérons que ton engagement envers la communauté se poursuivra maintenant que tu entames le secondaire.
TED ED STUDENT TALKS : En mai dernier, la CSEM organisait ses tout premiers exposés d'élèves TED Ed Student Talks à l'Académie Royal West. Cet événement remplace le concours d'art oratoire de la CSEM. Les exposés des élèves suivants ont été soumis à TED : Victoria Gonzalez et Mani Sadeghi de l'Académie LaurenHill, Nguyen Quynh Anh de l'Académie Marymount, Matilda Bernatchez du Collège Vincent Massey et Michella Masella de l'école secondaire Laurier Macdonald. La finale de la deuxième édition des exposés TED Ed Student Talks dans les écoles secondaires se tiendra le 25 mai.
CULTURE ET CITOYENNETÉ AU QUÉBEC: Le ministère de l'Éducation lance le programme d'études Culture et citoyenneté québécoise (CCQ). Mis en place par certaines écoles sur une base facultative en 2023-2024, ce programme sera obligatoire dans toutes les écoles pour l’année scolaire 2024-2025. Tout en se familiarisant avec la culture et la citoyenneté au Québec, les élèves seront amenés à évaluer des sources, des informations et des arguments, à identifier les caractéristiques propres à la culture et la société québécoise d'aujourd'hui, et à observer les relations sociales qui y sont liées. Les thèmes tels la culture et le dialogue seront d’abord abordés au primaire. Les apprentissages se poursuivront ensuite au secondaire avec l'éthique, la citoyenneté et la sociologie. L'objectif du programme CCQ n'est pas d'apporter des réponses précises à des questions éthiques complexes, mais plutôt d’amener les élèves à développer la pensée critique et leur capacité à s'engager librement dans un dialogue empathique. Le programme privilégie la valorisation des principes démocratiques, d'un État de droit laïque et des valeurs d'égalité et de respect de la dignité des êtres humains comme il est prévu dans la Charte des droits et libertés de la personne. Au terme de sa scolarité, l'élève aura acquis des connaissances pertinentes sur le développement personnel, les relations interpersonnelles ainsi que sur toutes les dimensions de la culture et de la société québécoise. Ainsi, chaque enfant aura développé des compétences essentielles à sa participation éclairée à l'exercice de la citoyenneté au Québec. COURSE TERRY FOX : Année après année, les organisateurs des courses Terry Fox sont éblouis par la générosité des écoles d’un bout à l’autre du Canada. Chaque école qui s'inscrit reçoit une trousse Terry Fox contenant du matériel promotionnel, une page de collecte de fonds en ligne personnalisée et l'accès à un large éventail de ressources sur Internet. Voici une lettre que nous avons reçue et qui contient des informations à l'intention des écoles désireuses de participer.
PROGRAMMATION DE LA SPCA : La SPCA de Montréal a élaboré le programme Éducation à la compassion et effectue une tournée dans les écoles primaires depuis le printemps dernier! Erin Martellani, responsable de la campagne Éducation à la compassion et Défense des animaux, a l'honneur d’animer ces premières présentations. Jusqu'à présent, l'expérience qu'elle a vécue en visitant les élèves de la maternelle à la 3e année s’est révélée une véritable source d'inspiration. Les enfants nourrissent une curiosité et un intérêt naturels pour les animaux, et ceux qu'elle a visités ne faisaient pas exception à la règle. Ils étaient enthousiastes de découvrir les ressemblances et les différences étonnantes entre les humains et les animaux, et brûlaient d'impatience de partager leurs propres expériences avec la classe. Intuitivement, les enfants étaient aptes à comprendre ce que les animaux, dont ils ont entendu les histoires, avaient pu ressentir dans différentes situations, et étaient très impatients d'apprendre à interpréter le langage corporel d'un chien. Ces aptitudes essentielles les aideront pour savoir comment approcher un chien en toute sécurité et quand respecter son besoin d'espace, ce qui est crucial dans la prévention des morsures. « Tout compte fait, je ne saurais dire si la partie la plus gratifiante de ces présentations a été les nombreux câlins spontanés que j'ai reçus, la participation et la réceptivité des élèves tout au long de mes visites ou le simple fait de savoir que l'avenir pourrait être un peu plus prometteur grâce à ces enfants inspirants », a-t-elle déclaré. LA CHORALE : En novembre 2022, la chorale de la CSEM a offert une prestation dans une vidéo dédiée à l'école Westmount Park, accompagnée du chœur de chambre professionnel Les Rugissants et du quatuor à cordes Cobalt, dans le cadre d’un épisode de leur série ARCHES qui met en lumière la musique et l’architecture à Montréal. Rappelant le parcours d’un élève qui arrive aux termes de ses études à l’école Westmount Park, ce bâtiment arbore un style émanant des courants britanniques néo-Tudor et néo-gothique caractérisés par l’utilisation de la pierre et de la brique, une architecture imposante inspirée notamment des châteaux, forteresses et églises. Cette fois-ci, Les Rugissants ont partagé la scène avec la chorale de jeunes de la Commission scolaire English-Montréal et le Quatuor Cobalt pour interpréter un extrait de Stabat Mater de Giovanni Battista Pergolesi.
LE FONDS BELL: En 2015, le Fonds Bell a été lancé sous l'égide de la Fondation du cancer des Cèdres. Il avait pour but de fournir à chaque personne qui reçoit un diagnostic de cancer une trousse-réconfort renfermant des articles utiles en particulier pendant les traitements de chimiothérapie : une couverture spécialement conçue avec pochette pour les pieds et pochette pour les appareils électroniques, une bouteille d'eau, un magazine en partenariat avec Montréal en Santé, une petite boîte de menthes, un bloc-notes et un livre à colorier. Or, la pièce de résistance de cette trousse est sans contredit la carte de prompt rétablissement écrite de la main des élèves du Bas Saint Laurent jusqu’en Estrie, qui suscite le plus d’émotion chez les patients et des réactions comme celles-ci : « Je m'appelle Suzanne et je suis la patiente n° 1170312. Je tiens à vous remercier pour la trousse-réconfort que m'a remise, à ma grande surprise, l'infirmière de chimiothérapie. La couverture si belle, riche en couleurs et surtout réconfortante. Le contenu est vraiment pratique! Très satisfaite! Elle me suivra lors de tous mes traitements! » Récemment, la fondatrice Judy Martin a reçu une photo de la part de la bénévole Toni Gefulsa. La voisine de Toni, Sara Luciano, est enseignante en 5e et 6e année à l'école primaire Pierre de Coubertin de la CSEM. Ses élèves ont réalisé un projet en soutien à cette inititive. GEMSTAR: Le programme GemStar du Cercle d’excellence en bourses d'études et mentorat, offert par Playmas Montreal Cultural Association entreprend sa troisième année, d'octobre 2024 à avril 2025, couronné par une cérémonie de remise des diplômes en juin. À cette occasion, les participantes et participants retenus se verront remettre une bourse de 1 500 $ pour leurs études collégiales. Le programme GemStar vise à récompenser et encourager de brillants élèves de la communauté noire qui entrent en 5e secondaire et font preuve d'excellence sur le plan scolaire en affichant une moyenne d'au moins 80 %. Chaque élève sélectionné sera jumelé avec un mentor ou une mentore, un professionnel ou une professionnelle de la communauté, pour l’encadrer et le stimuler tout au long de l'année scolaire. La date limite de dépôt des candidatures est fixée au 19 septembre 2024 puisque le programme débutera le 4 octobre. EN SOUVENIR DE MIKE SHAW: La CSEM est attristée par le décès de l'ancien animateur de vie spirituelle et d'engagement communautaire, le Père Mike Shaw. Prêtre bien-aimé, frère, ami, confesseur, directeur spirituel, animateur de pastorale et enseignant, il est décédé l'été dernier. Né à Alresford, Hampshire en Angleterre, il a immigré à Montréal où l'église St. John Brébeuf fut pour lui une inspiration et une révélation sur le plan communautaire. Au terme d’un long questionnement intérieur, il fait son entrée au séminaire de Boston en 1971. Il fut ordonné prêtre catholique romain en 1975. Alors qu'il était encore diacre, il s’est joint à l'église St. Thomas à Becket, à Pierrefonds, une affectation qui allait changer sa vie. C'est là que le Père Mike a rencontré son amie de toujours, Margaret Million, et c'est ainsi qu'il est venu vivre au 252 Biscaye, où il est demeuré, jusqu'au décès de Margaret en 2019, membre bien aimé d'une communauté chrétienne loyale de l'ouest de l'île. Le Père Mike a vécu pleinement sa vocation : il s'est occupé des sans-abris, des malades, des personnes seules et des mourants. Partout où il est allé, il s’est familiarisé avec le nom et le parcours d'inconnus, reconnaissant la beauté et la valeur intrinsèque de chaque personne qu'il croisait sur son chemin. Comme le veut la tradition, son ministère sacerdotal ne lui a jamais permis de demeurer au même endroit. Après des décennies d'animation spirituelle dans les écoles de la CSEM de la métropole et de remplacement dans les églises partout sur l'île de Montréal, Mike, alors âgé de 76 ans, est finalement devenu curé à St. Edward the Confessor Mission à Pointe-Claire, où il s’est employé avec sa congrégation à apporter un souffle nouveau à la paroisse. Comme prêtre, il avait la réputation de faire en sorte que chacune et chacun se sentent bienvenus et aimés de Dieu, fassent partie de l'Église et du Corps du Christ. En guise de témoignage de sympathie, toute personne qui le désire peut, en mémoire du Père Mike, verser un don à l’une de ses œuvres de charité préférées : Operation Smile à https://www.operationsmile.org/, l'Armée du Salut, ou une œuvre de bienfaisance de votre choix.
JEUNES ÉTOILES : Le programme de basketball pour enfants de Montréal, en partenariat avec Jeunes Étoiles, offre une occasion exceptionnelle aux élèves d'améliorer leurs compétences en basketball, dans un environnement amusant et stimulant. Cette année, le programme de basketball Jeunes Étoiles aidera les participants et participantes à élever leur niveau de jeu! Nous mettons l'accent sur le jeu, en offrant aux enfants la possibilité de participer à 10 matchs palpitants. Accompagné par une équipe d’entraîneurs chevronné, chaque match est filmé pour que les joueurs et joueuses puissent le revoir et que les parents puissent en profiter. De plus, tous les participants et participantes reçoivent un chandail de basketball Jeunes Étoiles au moment de l'inscription. Inscris-toi dès maintenant et améliore ton niveau de jeu.
SERVICES DE L’ÉDUCATION DES ADULTES ET DE LA FORMATION PROFESSIONNELLE
RETROUVAILLES À PIUS : Nicolino Iannotti, Phil Carmosino et Paolo Fratarcangeli racontent que le 15 juin, les anciens et anciennes de la promotion 1990 de l'école polyvalente St. Pius X ont organisé une soirée mémorable, réunissant une quarantaine d'anciens élèves pour de merveilleuses retrouvailles. L'événement a eu lieu à l'Usine Grecque Souvlaki à Vaudreuil, où M. Carmosino a gracieusement accueilli les participants et participantes avec de délicieux plats et boissons, dans une atmosphère chaleureuse et conviviale. Angelo Palermo (Dynamic DJ) était l'animateur de la soirée et a su divertir tous les convives grâce à son choix musical sensationnel tout au long de la soirée. Ce fut un plaisir de retrouver d’anciens amis, de se remémorer les années passées à l'école secondaire. Frank Kermit a donné le coup d'envoi du souper en livrant une allocution sentie et en rendant hommage à tous ceux et celles qui nous ont quittés. Plus tard dans la soirée, Stefania Freda a interprété Total Eclipse of the Heart et O Sole Mio, question de divertir les invités. La soirée s'est poursuivie dans une ambiance ponctuée de rires et de pas de danse.
